From Sympathy to Purpose: A Volunteer’s Journey – Ai Geok’s Story

Ai Geok first stepped into SUN-DAC as a volunteer—moved by sympathy for persons with disabilities. But what began as compassion quickly grew into purpose. During a craft session, she met Jing Xiang, a client with limited hand mobility. Watching him meticulously complete beadwork despite the challenge left her deeply humbled.

“He worked twice as hard to finish what others might take half the time for,” she recalls.
Craft sessions soon became her favourite activity—not just for the creativity, but for how they empower clients with skills, pride, and confidence.
At SUN-DAC Bedok South, Ai Geok does it all: assisting with crafts, feeding, cleaning, and befriending clients—with unwavering heart. What keeps her coming back? The welcoming environment, the flexibility, and the joy of meaningful connection.
Her hope for the future is simple but powerful:
“I wish the Bedok South community could get to know SUN-DAC and our clients better—maybe through an open house or pop-up craft booths near the market. The more people see what our clients can do, the more understanding and acceptance will grow.”
