Ethan’s journey of self-improvement and independence at SUN-DAC

Ethan is a 21-year-old with autism who joined SUN-DAC Choa Chu Kang in January 2024. When he first arrived, he faced overwhelming behavioural challenges. He struggled with aggression and damaging property, needed two staff to support him at all times, and was placed on a reduced schedule. At one point, he was even suspended after a major meltdown. As his caregivers, we were filled with worry and fear about whether he could cope in this new environment.

Today, we are filled with relief and gratitude. With steady support from the SUN-DAC team, especially his Training Officer Akesh, Ethan has made incredible progress. He is calmer, more cooperative, and open to connecting with others. He now takes part in group activities and responds much better to structure and support.

Akesh’s patience and genuine care have been a lifeline for both Ethan and us. His open communication has helped Ethan manage his emotions more confidently, and we have learnt to be more present for Ethan during his difficult moments. Staying in close contact with Akesh has made a world of difference in helping us understand our son better.

We hope Ethan continues to grow in confidence, returns to a full day programme, and embraces more of what life has to offer. We are deeply thankful to the team at SUN DAC for creating a safe, nurturing space where Ethan can grow, learn, and thrive.

Ethan’s story is just one of many waiting to be written.
