From Fear to Freedom: Guo Hao’s Journey in the Water

Ng Guo Hao, a 23-year-old client with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), enrolled at SUN-DAC Upper Thomson with a deep fear of water. When he first joined the swimming programme, even standing near the poolside felt overwhelming. For several sessions, Guo Hao stood at the edge – hesitant, anxious, and unable to step in.
But with patient and consistent support from SUN-DAC staff and dedicated coaches, Guo Hao slowly began to trust the process. Over the course of a year and a half, he made remarkable progress – first dipping his feet, then entering the water, and eventually engaging fully in lessons. Today, he confidently enters the pool, kicks and moves with support, and enjoys every moment of his weekly swimming sessions. What was once a source of fear has now become a source of joy and pride.
“Celebrate the small wins,” shares Assistant Senior Training Officer, Preston, who has witnessed Guo Hao’s growth firsthand. His journey is a testament to the power of persistence, trust-building, and personalised support in helping clients overcome fear and unlock their potential.
