Seen, Heard, and Celebrated: Guan Hua’s Story

When Guan Hua first stepped into SUN-DAC, he barely spoke. Reserved and soft-spoken, he often responded to greetings with just a nod. After undergoing cataract surgery, he became more self-conscious, withdrawing even further from those around him.

At SUN-DAC, Guan Hua was introduced to programmes designed to nurture growth, confidence, and connection. Among the many activities, it was iBoccia – an inclusive and adapted sport – that lit a spark within him. At first, he was hesitant, showing little interest. But as weeks passed, something shifted. His throws grew precise and deliberate, his focus unwavering. Trainers noticed: Guan Hua wasn’t just playing – he was excelling.

Encouraged by his progress, he was chosen to represent SUN-DAC in an inter-organisational iBoccia competition. Training with a student teammate, Guan Hua began responding with sharp eye contact and quiet determination. On competition day, his efforts shone – he placed third. For his family, especially his sister who came to cheer him on, it was a moment of immense pride. “She was so happy,” a trainer recalled, as the family celebrated together.

That victory was more than a medal. It was recognition, belonging, and proof that Guan Hua had something special to offer. From then on, he began opening up more – greeting staff, joining group activities with quiet confidence, and forming subtle yet meaningful connections. As one staff member put it, “He may not say much, but when you’re with him long enough, you see it – he listens, he observes, and he cares.”

Guan Hua’s journey reminds us that every person, no matter how quiet, carries incredible potential. Through inclusive programmes like iBoccia, hidden strengths emerge, and confidence is built not just through words, but through trust, presence, and play.

✨ At SUN-DAC, we believe in creating more stories like Guan Hua’s – stories of growth, dignity, and inclusion. But we cannot do it alone. With your support, we can continue to provide life-changing opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
