A Letter to Mom: Mdm Florence and Julian

For Florence, motherhood has been a journey of learning, adapting, and loving in new ways.

At 60, she has come to understand that raising her son Julian, who is on the autism spectrum, is not about following a fixed path, but about meeting him where he is each day. While his verbal language is limited, Julian is intuitive, with a strong memory and a love for movement. He finds joy in activities like swimming, cycling, and basketball.

Over time, Florence has shifted her perspective as a mother. Instead of focusing on long term expectations, she has learned to take things one day at a time, celebrating small but meaningful milestones. Every effort Julian makes to communicate or engage is something she treasures deeply.

With the support of caregivers, therapists, and the team at SUN-DAC, Julian is in a structured and nurturing environment where he continues to grow. He now participates in activities like basketball and dance, building confidence and learning to connect with others in his own way.

For Florence, one of the greatest reassurances is knowing that Julian is seen as an individual, supported not just in his needs, but in his strengths. That support has helped ease the weight of caregiving, allowing her to move through each day with greater confidence and peace of mind.

This Mother’s Day, A Letter to Mom is a chance to honour mothers like Florence, who navigate each day with strength, patience, and quiet courage.

With your support, we can continue empowering persons with disabilities like Julian, and walk alongside families as they build their own journeys of growth and hope.

Because sometimes, love is not about having all the answers.

It is about showing up, learning along the way, and choosing to keep going.

Write a letter to Mom.
Honour a love like hers.
