Small Steps, Big Progress: Li Eng’s Journey

Small Steps, Big Progress: Li Eng’s Journey

September 11, 2025, Written by 0 comment

Each morning, Li Eng walks into SUN-DAC with her shirt neatly tucked, headphones over her ears, and a quiet determination in her step. Diagnosed with intellectual disability and autism, she once found it difficult to focus – often wandering before completing tasks and needing constant supervision.

Through SUN-DAC’s pre-vocational training programme, she has found stability in routine. Packing vegetables and sorting colourful Hama beads have become familiar tasks, building her confidence and focus. Trainers tailor activities to her strengths in counting and detail, using simple visual guides and a gradual, hands-on approach to introduce new challenges.

Her love for coffee and biscuits adds warmth to her training, with small treats and praise celebrating each success. Beyond work skills, Li Eng has grown more independent in daily living – now brushing her teeth, sweeping floors, and washing dishes with minimal reminders.

One small but meaningful milestone stands out: she now recognises her own belongings, a sign of growing self-awareness and identity.

Li Eng’s journey is a reminder that progress often comes in small, steady steps – each one bringing her closer to independence, confidence, and pride in her achievements.
