Patience, Perseverance, and Progress – Kok Hui’s Journey to Independence

When Kok Hui, a 46-year-old with Down syndrome, first joined SUN-DAC Choa Chu Kang in 2020, he was known for his cheerful personality and strong sense of independence. He managed his daily routines confidently, including being fully toilet-trained – a milestone his caregivers and trainers were proud of.
However, when Training Officer (TO) Rajan took over his class, he noticed something unusual. Despite his abilities, Kok Hui had begun wetting his pants each time he went to the toilet. It wasn’t a matter of ability – it was a habit that had quietly formed over time.
Determined to help, Rajan didn’t give up. He observed Kok Hui patiently, walking alongside him to the washroom, offering gentle reminders and encouragement: “Let’s try to stay dry today.” Each time, Rajan’s words were filled with care, not criticism. Slowly, those small reminders began to make a big difference.
Through persistence and compassion, Kok Hui started to unlearn the habit. The reminders became less frequent. The accidents stopped. And once again, he regained his independence – and pride.
When incontinence issues resurfaced later, Rajan continued to support Kok Hui with the same patience and encouragement, celebrating every small step of progress along the way.
Kok Hui’s story is more than a tale of behaviour correction – it’s a story of trust, dignity, and the quiet power of human connection. It reminds us that growth doesn’t always come from grand achievements, but from patient, consistent care.
