For Mdm Irene, love has always meant showing up, no matter how difficult the day may be.

At 65, she continues to care for her son, Jit Kiang, with quiet strength and unwavering dedication. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Jit Kiang has been part of SUN-DAC Choa Chu Kang Centre for over 26 years. Behind him is a mother who has carried the weight of both caregiving and providing for her family, often at the same time.

After losing her husband to cancer in 2002, Mdm Irene was left to raise Jit Kiang and his younger brother on her own. It was not easy navigating financial challenges while caring for a child with special needs, but she remained resilient, determined to give her children the stability they needed.

Today, she works part time as a cleaner in the mornings. While Jit Kiang attends SUN-DAC, she is able to focus on her work with peace of mind. In the afternoons, she runs errands, buys groceries, and sometimes allows herself small moments of rest. This routine has brought back a sense of balance to her daily life.

One moment stays close to her heart.

In December 2023, Mdm Irene had to undergo an operation. The night before, Jit Kiang cried, afraid of losing his mother. He refused to attend the centre the next day, unable to bear the thought of being apart from her. The operation was successful, and she was able to return hope to fully recover.

Over the years, SUN-DAC has been a steady source of support for both mother and son. From the time Jit Kiang joined in 1999, the centre has provided a safe and caring environment where he is well looked after each day. For Mdm Irene, this brings comfort and reassurance.

She is also deeply grateful for SUN-DAC’s support in assisting to secure financial assistance, which has helped ease some of her burdens. With this support, she is able to move through life with greater stability, knowing that her son is in good hands.

Beyond caregiving, there are also moments of joy they share together. This year, Mdm Irene will be volunteering at iBoccia, taking part alongside her son. It is something she looks forward to, a chance to stand beside him not just as a caregiver, but as a partner in the experience.

This Mother’s Day, A Letter to Mom is a chance to honour mothers like Mdm Irene, whose love is steady, selfless and enduring.

With your support, we can continue empowering persons with disabilities like Jit Kiang, and provide families with the care and support they need.

Because sometimes, love is not found in grand gestures.
It is found in the everyday acts of showing up, again and again.

Write a letter to Mom.
Honour a love like hers.

SUN-DAC
